‘Tread’ by Richard Wentworth in Thinking Aloud

“Traces remain, however, of certain invisible yet complicit routes around objects. From airport departure lounges to motorway service stations, there are holes in carpets, holes where travellers stand to gaze out of windows at the slick surface of tarmac or sky, holes where itchy feet have pawed the pile, holes that map anticipation and expectation, holes where meaning seeps in. These sidelong trips from coffee-machine to window to reverie are like any interactive movement through any room, any city, any art gallery, any collection. They shape the space and leave marks. Like flags or clues.”
